In the Nursery: Gates at 12 Months

Gates has been on the go since about the time she turned four months old. And, this weekend's portrait session was no different. Gates had little interest in playing in front of the camera, wanting to check out the camera itself instead.

With cubes' help, I got two shots I really liked that show how much Gates has changed over the past few months. (Additional photos from the session can be found on Flickr.)

Which portrait do you like better?

In case you missed it, I shared how Gates celebrated her first birthday last week: among friends and family at our flat and enjoying her first Michelin star dining experience at Luce.

Gates Plays with Her Racetrack

Here are highlights of what Gates has been up to from my mom's notes:
  • March 7, 2013: "Worked at feeding self. Good work putting some in mouth!"
  • March 11, 2013: "During water playtime, helps put toys in tub and later put them away!"
  • March 14, 2013: "Took washcloth & "washed" hair and face with water!"
  • March 19, 2013: "At lunchtime, Gates went to kitchen sliding door, knocked and smacked her lips in her eating sound. [Grandma] asked her if she wanted to eat [and she responded] 'Da!'"
  • March 21, 2013: "Reads and talks about books she picks out. A half hour to forty five minutes in morning and again in afternoon!"
  • March 26, 2013: "Loves to splash and play with her toys [during water time]."
  • March 28, 2013: "Washed self and toys. Splashed and sang."
  • March 29, 2013: During water time, "'shows off' for Auntie!" Loves to read (over 30 books in a 4 hour period)!
Gates' Helping Adjust Her Crib

As evidenced by her recent Michelin star dining excursion, Gates continues trying new foods, including Brussels sprouts, Diver scallops, Sole, Ravioli, and blood oranges, along with her regular fare:
  • Minced deli cuts: ham and turkey.
  • Chicken.
  • Broccoli, carrots, peas, potatoes (Yukon Gold, Red, and others), and squash.
  • Bananas and pears.
  • Wheat toast, potato bread, French bread, egg bagel, tortillas, and rice.
  • Apple/apricot sauce.
  • Cream of rice cereal and oatmeal.
  • Vegetable soup.
  • Scrambled eggs and bacon.

In The Nursery is a monthly series, published on either the second or fourth Monday of each month, depending on whether Gates has a well baby check up or not, that chronicles Gates' growth during her first twenty four months. This series was inspired by Nicole Balch of Making it Lovely's series for her two children: Eleanor and August.

How to Store Fresh Winter Squash, Potatoes, Onions, and Garlic

I love a well organized kitchen and pantry. Sadly, since moving to San Francisco, all of the places I've lived have lacked a pantry. No pantry means one has to get creative with storage. Some solutions, while pretty, aren't always best at keeping food. I'm now on a mission to organize my kitchen with prevention of food spoilage in mind.     Right now winter vegetables are available from our CSA, some of which I'm not very familiar with -- hard or winter squash varieties for example. And, with cubes until recently on a soft foods diet we didn't go through what I was buying as quickly as before. So, I was seeing potatoes turn green or shrivel. Squash rot. Garlic turn to dust. Seeing this waste a light bulb went on: I must be storing the vegetables wrong. To my cookbooks and the Internet I went in search of the right way(s) to keep them. And I discovered, or rather confirmed, I was doing it wrong.   General Guidelines for Storing Vegetables Most of us don't hav...

( updated 02/24/2022 ) Welcome! Nice to meet you!   I’m Eden, a fourth-generation Californian. Together my husband, 9.75 year old daughter, and Maine Coon/Ragamuffin rescue cat are in the process of unpacking and nesting in our new 100+ year old Craftsman in Berkeley, CA (until this past December we called a 100-year old, a 847 sq ft Edwardian flat in San Francisco home). We define The Good Life with haves not wants and experiences not things.     What's your story?
