Summer Bucket List Challenge: First Taste of Bi-Rite Ice Cream

Do you remember your first time? I certainly don't. It was probably Baskin Robbins, but who knows. Gates will remember her first time. Gates first tasted ice cream at San Francisco's Bi-Rite Creamery.

Waiting

I remember summer evenings as a kid. We'd all pile in the car and head down to the Baskin Robbins at Bayhill for an ice cream cone. I was supposed to eat sherbet, a refreshing dairy-free alternative to ice cream, but could never bring myself to what I felt was settling. Orange wasn't as yummy as a real orange. And who knew what was in Rainbow? My favorite scoops were Bubble Gum Ice Cream (not for the ice cream but for the gum), Rocky Road, Chocolate Chip, and later Mint Chip.

What's your favorite ice cream?

The Queue

It was slightly overcast the day we headed out to Bi-Rite Creamery for Gates' first taste of ice cream. I'd incorrectly assumed that the lack of sun would mean a short line. I was wrong. The line snaked around the corner and up the hill. We'd been telling Gates all about ice cream on our walk so I didn't feel that turning around and coming back another day was an option. I also didn't think buying a pint of pre-packed ice cream at either Bi-Rite Creamery or Bi-Rite Market was appropriate either. (A local's trick is to buy pre-packed pints and skip the line.)

Gates Eats Ice Cream for the First Time

After the anticipation and the 20+ minute queue, cubes and I couldn't wait to have Gates try her ice cream. The verdict? Chocolate is not her thing. She liked the Vegan Coconut Chocolate, which was lighter than the Dark Chocolate, a little better, but overall was not impressed. We'll be trying Vanilla or Strawberry next time and also heading to Mitchell's, another San Francisco favorite, to sway her opinion.

How are you doing with your Summer Bucket List?

Summer Bucket Challenge: Have Ice Cream at Bi-Rite

This summer has gotten away from us. It's almost the end of June and we've only completed three of our activities: Tend a garden (actually still in progress); Have a family portrait taken; and now, Have ice cream at Bi-Rite Creamery. I'm thinking I really should have followed my own advice for completing a Summer Bucket List without a mad rush at the close of summer: Schedule your activities on the calendar.

Bon Appetit!
