support, community, and suppers: clearing our pantry one meal at a time

This year is about support and community. So we’re kicking 2026 off by clearing out our pantry, one shared meal at a time. Here’s how to join us.

Unable to attend in person? We have grab-and-go meals too!

We're facing the prospect of moving our entire kitchen and pantry in advance of fumigating for termites. Rather than be sad, I thought of the old adage, "when life hands you lemons, make lemonade."

And, the two words I'm bringing into 2026 "support" and "community" came to mind.

Termite fumigation was definitely not on our bingo cards for 2026. So, it's definitely an unexpected expense, one not budgeted or saved for. It's not just the cost of fumigating–that's almost $5k. There's that plus the costs for moving our stuff, storing our stuff, and securing somewhere else for us and our two cats to live for a week. It adds up fast.

Years ago when I lived in Texas I hosted monthly dinners. Each dinner had a purpose–introduce Texas wines into Austin restaurants, help about to be laid off friends land their next role, and so on.

I'm bringing back these suppers—this time from our home, La Cocina–and asking for donations to help us cover our unexpected termite costs.

My ask is simple in exchange for a meal, contribute what you can—sliding scale from $5 to $25.

We won't turn anyone away for lack of funds–emotional support is just as valued.

We’re hosting 5 to 12 people at a time, once or twice a week until the freezer is empty and the cupboards are bare.

I’m calling it Operation Pantry Clean Out.

The idea is simple:

  • You come over. I cook a meal from what we’ve got.
  • You contribute what you can—sliding scale from $5 to $25.
  • No one turned away.

We clear the shelves and make space for what’s next. Together.

The first two suppers were this past week. And we kicked it off with a throwback to our annual BBQ Showdown last November. For friends who missed the celebration the first time, this was a welcome second helping:

  • Charlie Vergos Rendezvous Ribs (full rack)
  • Iron Works BBQ Ribs (full rack)
  • Kreuz Market Ribs
  • Rudy’s Texas BBQ Sausage (1 lb)
  • Kreuz Market Sausage (2 links)
  • Kreuz Market BBQ Baked Beans
  • German Potato Salad
  • Drop Biscuits
  • Instant Mashed Potatoes with Duck Gravy*

*This duck gravy blew a guest’s mind. And we’ve still got two pints of pan drippings left to make more! Expect to see it again.

upcoming menus.

Here’s what’s coming before February 18:

  • Monday, February 2nd: A big pasta night (with vegan and gluten-free options)
  • Wednesday, February 4th: Chili—both chicken and vegan versions
  • Monday, February 9th: Texas, Kansas City, and Memphis BBQ

Each meal is designed around what we have on hand. Every dinner is a little different.

This year’s about asking for and giving support. About showing up. About making space—physically and emotionally—for something new.

We’re clearing our pantry. And you’re invited to help us do it, one meal at a time.
