Monthly Snapshot: Gates at 18 Months

Image
September was a crazy month for us here at The Station. The month started off with us frantically trying to complete our Summer Bucket List Challenge and ended with cubes in the hospital and Gates at my parents' house.     When we returned from Burning Man, cubes and I had decided we wanted to spend more time with family and friends. We dusted off our Summer Bucket List Challenge and looked at which remaining items we could complete in September. That first weekend we crossed off one more item: picnic at Mission Dolores Park. (Gates played at the playground, and, then because it was a little chilly, we ate at Regalito just a few blocks away.)     It's funny what you miss when your daily routine changes. I especially missed the times when Gates climbs up into my lap to hear a book or two being read. Coming home and waking up to a quiet flat was odd; Gates brings such life into a place. For most of a month, our interactions with Gates came through nightly phone ca...

Working with Fonts: Four Tips for Filtering Font Choices

Many of us have a love/hate relationship with fonts. Who can say they don't cringe a little when they see Comic Sans? (I still have to figure out how to change the font default on my iPad's Notepad app.) We also tend to be obsessive in our use of fonts we love for personal projects.   And then it happens. I came up with a few potential products. And then, I realized I had a problem. My favorite fonts, those fonts that to me represent my personality , are only available for personal use. And, back to the drawing board I had to go.   To ensure you (and I) don't end up branding with the wrong fonts, here are some simple tips:   1. Limit yourself to commercial...

30 Days of Thanksgiving: Letting Go and Embracing the New "Normal"

Image
It's easy to take the little things for granted. Fresh challah on Fridays for Shabbat. Family time on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings before Gates goes to daycare. But, when they're missing you realize how much they filled your life.     Friday August 16th, the path cubes' and my lives were on took an alternate route. What started as a day to ourselves, one begun toasting with Mimosas, ended with a brief trip to the Emergency Room (ER). Fast forward three weeks, after taking cubes to an out-patient procedure intended on preventing him from a return ER visit, we were back in the ER--a different ER, but an ER nonetheless.     Making Time for the Little Things In the time between cubes' two ER visits, I took a break from blogging. During that break, when I would normally style photo shoots, I spent time with my family and our friends. I had no idea that we'd be heading back to an ER, nor did I ever dream cubes would be enjoying an extended hospital stay...
